HoopYogini™ Instructor Spotlight: Heather Says

Sep 05, 2019

Heather Says, a Certified HoopYogini™ Teacher and founder of HoopCubed, speaks on the hoop’s ability to inspire confidence and spread the love and joy of physical movement.

How did you discover hooping?

A couple of years before I turned 30, I made a list of things I wanted to do before that big birthday. Relearning to hoop (as I never had as an adult) was on the list and I fell in love with it, like nothing ever before. I had just moved to Houston, and through the hoop I met new friends. By my 30th birthday I was teaching hoop dance and had started my own small business, HoopCubed.

What do you love about hooping and what has it meant for you?

I think my favorite part of hooping is that everyone starts on an even playing field. You don’t have to be thin or tall or young or a dancer. Your only competition is yourself. The hoop has given me confidence in not only my physical appearance, but more so in my ability to spread the love and joy of physical movement.

What do you love about HoopYogini™?

Oh gosh, everything!! I love how approachable it is to people who may wonder if hooping is even something they can do. Hooping and yoga were meant to be together, and the HoopYogini™ program brings them together so beautifully.

What do you love most about teaching?

I love seeing people walk into a class, completely prepared to fail, and leave doing something they didn’t dream they could. The shock on their faces makes it all worth it. I also love seeing students who may not ever meet outside of class exchange numbers and become friends. Building community is a huge goal of mine.

Give us a sense of your background or approach with teaching.

Before hoop dance I had never taught anything, but I loved telling people what to do! I was surprised by how much I not only enjoyed it, but excelled at it. When my students leave I hope they know how proud I am of them, and that improvement is always the goal. Improvement isn’t necessary just for those taking the class, but I strive to improve also an instructor and student of hooping. I make sure to make myself available for any questions, and remind them that hooping is for them, not for Instagram Likes or video views. Also, continuing to keep up with the new trends in hooping is incredibly important to me as an instructor.

Don’t forget to play! Your workout does not have to be miserable, it can be incredibly fun, and should be beneficial to both body and mind. When something feels as good as HoopYogini™ does, I can’t help but want to share it with anyone who will listen.
