How did you discover hooping?

I discovered hooping at a local show about 6 years ago. There was this beauty spinning around on the dance floor totally hypnotizing me and stealing the show. I knew I HAD to learn how to do that!


What do you love about hooping and what has it meant for you?

My favorite thing about hooping is the way it’s opened up my dance and then my life. My movement background is primarily highland dancing, aikido and cheerleading; very specific movements meant to be performed exactly the same way by each practitioner. Because of that I got reeeaaallly hung up on tricks and berated myself for not doing them as well as I perceived others to.

How did you discover hooping?

I discovered hooping while I was at an event called the Ukulele World Congress. A fellow “uker” played, sang, and hula hooped for her open mic set. At some other point during that weekend I looked out into the field saw her peacefully shoulder hooping in the sun. She looked so content and happy, but I didn’t see it as something I wanted to do.

Because of someone I was dating at the time, I became fascinated with making hula hoops but, I still didn’t see myself as a hooper. How did you discover hooping?

A couple of years before I turned 30, I made a list of things I wanted to do before that big birthday. Relearning to hoop (as I never had as an adult) was on the list and I fell in love with it, like nothing ever before. I had just moved to Houston, and through the hoop I met new friends. By my 30th birthday I was teaching hoop dance and had started my own small business, HoopCubed.

What Size Hula Hoop Should I Use?

Size really does matter!
Ha ha!!!

The size of your adult hula hoop is a very important feature for your hooping success.

Many who return to hula hooping as an adult, pick up a kid’s hoop at a party or picnic.

They get in the hoop and wonder why they can’t keep it up – “I was great at this as a kid.”

The experience can jostle the ego and can create a feeling of defeat.

Below are some quick tips on how to pick the perfect size for your hooping and daily HoopYogini™ practice.

Beginners/New Hoopers – How To Find Your Perfect Fit:

1.  Size – Ideally, you want a hoop size/diameter that when you place the hoop vertically on the ground and at your feet, the top of the hoop touches your belly button.  If the hoop goes a half an inch to a full inch above your navel, that’s fine too.  You just don’t want anything lower than your navel.
